Startup WindBorne Systems Launches AI Weather Tool, Outperforms European Standard
US startup WindBorne Systems has launched a new AI weather forecasting tool called WeatherMesh-6. It updates predictions every hour and is more accurate than the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a top global standard. The model's resolution reaches 3 kilometers in Europe and the US.
Founded by Stanford students in 2019, WindBorne first made weather balloons to sell data. In 2022, they shifted to building their own AI model, finding it more valuable. Now, they operate about 400 balloons worldwide, feeding real-time data directly into the model—a key advantage.
Chief Product Officer Kai Marshland says WeatherMesh-6's five-day temperature forecasts are as accurate as traditional one-day predictions. CEO John Dean claims AI weather firms without unique data sources can't survive. While traditional models rely on supercomputers, AI models are faster but less precise. WindBorne raised $25 million in 2024, valuing it at $85 million.
