Boston Dynamics' Atlas Robot Shows AI Skills: Easily Moves Fridge onto Table, Aims to Become General Physical Work Tool
Boston Dynamics recently released a video showing its Atlas humanoid robot successfully moving a fridge onto a table. In the video, the robot lifts the fridge with both hands, walks to the table, rotates its upper body 180 degrees, and places the fridge on the table smoothly.
Atlas uses AI-driven behavior to coordinate its whole body for heavy loads. It leverages reinforcement learning to simulate lifting heavy objects, learning to adapt to different versions of fridges in real life (such as weight, position, grip strength). This adaptability is one of the core modules of physical intelligence, combining control and perception technologies.
Boston Dynamics stated that it is turning Atlas into a general physical work tool. To achieve performance and reliability in real-world environments, a leap in hardware and behavioral capabilities is needed.
