China launches its first comprehensive AI risk insurance plan
AI is now everywhere—in customer service, writing, and data analysis. But who pays when AI makes mistakes or harms others? This question is getting more and more attention. At the 2026 Financial Street Forum in China, the country's first comprehensive AI application risk insurance plan was officially released. It uses insurance products to cover losses that AI services cause to third parties, as well as costs faced by AI providers themselves. This fills a gap in the AI insurance market. China's Supreme People's Court has already made it clear that saying “the content was made by AI” cannot be an excuse to avoid responsibility. The insurance covers cases where AI negligence leads to content that harms others' rights and causes injury or property damage. Insurance companies set prices based on how the AI is used, what content it makes, and how much data it handles each day. These products mainly target AI large model developers, app makers, and solution providers. Similar insurance is now extending to office agents, language models, and even humanoid robots.
