Google upgrades Beam video meeting platform with new experimental features for group calls
Google has upgraded its 3D video meeting platform Google Beam at the 2026 I/O developer conference, adding experimental features for group meetings. The platform, formerly Project Starline, uses AI volume video models to create depth from multiple angles, making eye contact and subtle expressions easier to catch. The new feature improves the experience for non-Beam users: when joining via MacBook or Windows laptop, their 2D video is rendered close to life-size, creating a table-like effect. Spatial audio also matches each video stream to the speaker's position. Google says non-Beam devices may still connect in 2D due to hardware limits.
