NVIDIA in talks to turn old telecom buildings into small data centers

According to The Information, US telecom provider Brightspeed is in talks with NVIDIA about turning several old telecom buildings into small data centers.

NVIDIA first pitched the idea to Brightspeed's parent company Apollo Global Management. It has now submitted a written plan and hopes to visit the buildings. Brightspeed owns about 130 buildings in the US, mostly used for data and voice traffic.

NVIDIA expects these sites could offer about 1 gigawatt of computing power, fitting over 2,200 Supermicro Vera Rubin NVL72 racks. Each rack holds 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs. The conversion still needs cooling systems and local approvals, but it faces less red tape and less community pushback than building from scratch.

OpenAI and Anthropic are also weighing similar small data centers. Still, for AI model training, one large unified computing cluster in a single location remains the better choice.
